This past weekend was an emotional time for me; those that know me know I have a dog Tara. Tara is 10 going on 11 and she has seizures much like epileptic seizures which we have been treating with Phenobarbital for the past 5-6 years. The problem besides the seizures which are quite scary when they happen is the prolonged use of the drug can damage her liver and can cause her to have other health problems.
Recently she has been having the start of seizures where she kind of shudders and just stands and spaces out for 30-40 seconds at a time. These are not full blown seizures; she has not had a full blown seizure for almost a year. But still these “almost seizures” have me very concerned and worried. The one thing I want to ensure is she is not suffering and she has a good quality of life. With her pill prescription needing to be renewed I asked the Vet about testing her to see how her liver has been impacted from the prolonged use of the medication and he discussed with me the level of the drug in her system needed to be tested as well. I asked him of the impact and he indicated that if the levels were too high we would have to either adjust how much medication she was getting or look at different options. Here is where my major worry began as we have adjusted her Phenobarbital to a lower amount in the past on several occasions and we saw daily seizures within 2-3 weeks of making the change. I spent the weekend concerned that the Vet was going to tell me one of several different things. First their was liver damage and all the problems that come from having liver problems. Second that the Phenobarbital levels are too high and we would have to adjust her levels down with the potential of seizures happening again. Finally there could possibly be other problems which would come out from the tests.
Needless to say I spent a rather emotional weekend not really sure if I was going to be making a hard decision on Monday after receiving the news from the Vet. I spent the weekend at home and just vegged with Tara my only diversion was to attend the Motorcycle show to try and take my mind off of things. It did not work.
So I connected with the Vet on Monday and he gave me the best news we could possibly have gotten. Her liver enzymes look good and her Phenobarbital level is exactly at the level it should be at to achieve best results. This was a huge relief to me as I would be really lost if I did not have her to take care of and to talk to each day. Those who do not have pets or have never had a pet probably do not understand how difficult it is as she is a member of my family and a great companion. Each time we go to the Vet I ask him the same questions, “Is she suffering and does she have a good Quality of Life under the circumstances?” I am not looking forward to the day I get the answer that she is suffering.
