I’m Still Around

Sunday, April 9th, 2006

I am still kicking just had a miserable week, I have had a splitting headache since last Sunday. The problem is this is extremely unusual for me as I do not get headaches. Except for a period in 2004 when I was suffering from multiple severe headaches which were associated with serious balance problems as well. The headaches were in the back of my head. One of the very scarey things which happened during this period was after swimming one day I came out of the water and when I leaned over I had a dizzy spell and a clear liquid drained out of my nose. This scared the crap out of me.

My doctor sent me for all the tests including a head scan, which did not find anything (ok insert brain joke here) anyways I was finally sent to a specialist who found that within my inner ear the tiny crystals that float in the fluid present in the inner ear got dislodged and caused confusion and balance problems. With some physical therapy the problem clears up. So I had to complete some head exercises each day and after 6 weeks the balance issue was fixed. No pills and no surgery thankfully.

This time my headache started last Sunday and no matter what I did, no matter how I sat or laid down I could not relieve the intense discomfort. I got to the point on Thursday that I went to clinic and the only reason I did not go in was a large lineup. So I decided if the headache was still bothering me on Monday I would goto the clinic and make an appointment to goto the doctor. Well I woke up on this fine Saturday morning and my headache was mostly gone. While I was concerned about the length of this headache it was not the same as my previous bout as I did not suffer from any balance issues and the discomfort was in the front of my head around my sinuses. I have thought if there was anything which may have caused the headache but the only thing I can think is last Sunday I was moving stuff in the garage. Maybe when I was cleaning up I inhaled something which I could not handle very well. Not sure I am just rambling. But I am glad that the headache appears to be gone hopefully not to return.

Movie Remakes - Titanic - A Night to Remember

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

While their have been several incarnations of the telling of the sinking of the Titanic. Two that come to mind are 1958’s A Night to Remember and 1997 Titanic. Yes the biggest grossing film of all time is a remake of a classic. The better of the two is A Night to Remember which was an accurate retelling of the sinking based on the book of the same title. Even though it was made in the 50’s it had high production values and made good use of special effects. As for the version from James Cameron, he interposed a sappy love story over some spectacular use of special effects to try and bring the stroy alive. While the Cameron version had the benefit of actual details from the sunken wreck it wrecked the story by putting the crappy love story in the middle of the tragedy. It did not need to have gratuitous nudity to make the story. (I know Cameron needed to appeal to an American audience to put butts in the seats)
A Night to Remember is definitely worth seeing for both the historical accuracy and excellent storytelling.

I’m In Love

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

Yes it is true, it started in December of 2004. It is strange to think it has been almost a year and a half but this time has been a joy filled time for me. Everyday brings me more joy and I am pleasantly surprised that I am still this much in love after all this time. Time has not caused me to grow to complacent and even life with all it’s surprises has not dampened my total love and infatuation. I am not normally a person that will pour out my heart but I felt that I needed to express my feelings and let folks know where I am at. It is strange that I feel this strongly as I thought it would never happen for me but I am pleased. So what is the object of my total infatuation why it is my notebook computer, yes it was in December of 2004 when I first saw it sitting on the shelf beckoning to me. Once I got it home I knew this was the start of a beautiful friendship. We went on several trips together and that cemented our friendship and allowed us to develop our relationship. Now I know we will be together on all my future travels and maybe over time I will find an appropriate way to show my appreciation, such as more RAM. I will keep you updated on our relationship.

Customer Support The Final Episode

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

At the same time I was dealing with Bell I was also dealing with Epson for my CX4600 All in One printer/scanner etc. I had purchased this unit last Feburary at Costco and used it sparingly. I needed to print something off in Feburary and the unit indicated the black ink was out so I finally broke down and went and purchased a black cartridge at almost $50. When I got home I installed the new cartridge only to have the unit indicate that all the inks were out including the new one I just bought. So I contacted Tech Support through email as I did not want to incur a long distance call if necessary. It took a couple of days before I got a response recommending several things I should try. I completed these tasks and still no joy so another email with the wait of two days for a response. The response was to send in all the cartridges at their expense and they will send me all new ones.

Packaged up the cartridges and sent them off and again waited. Still was not able to print what I wanted but I was patient and after five days I received a package from Epson which was filled with ink for my 4600. I installed all the new ink and joy the unit indicated the ink was good. I was a happy camper and printed out a test page, can’t be too careful you know. Wouldn’t you know it the page came out blank so I ran a cleaning and head alignment and tried again. Looked at the page it shot out and it was blank. Hmmm so the ink is acceptable to the unit but nothing wanted to print.I checked all settings and made sure everything checked out then did some research online. I Googled it (did I say Google is my Friend) and found multiple postings concerning issues with the printer and issues with ink. So after some reading I again contacted Tech Support through email and the response indicated I would have to call their support line for further assistance.

So I bit the bullet and called Tech Support and spoke to a very nice young lady who looked at my file which contained all of the email correspondence. She asked me what was happening so I explained what steps I had taken to remedy the blank pages with no luck. She asked a couple of questions and was satisfied with everything I had done whereupon she said the magic words, since there is nothing else to do to fix your unit we will replace it with a new unit. Also since my unit the 4600 was no longer in production she said they would send me the next model up from the 4600. I was happy with this response and after a couple of questions to verify my details the call was done. Grand total of time on the phone 5 min., quick and efficient.

Since I been in the customer support business for a lot of years I understand how these interactions normally work and the unit they are sending out to me is normally a refurbished unit. A refurbished unit is normally one that has been returned for some reason or other and the factory makes it like new. I waited the 5-7 days as per the instructions and my package arrived. I setup the new CX4800 taking care to ensure I did all steps as per the installation instructions and printed a test page. It came out perfect so I decided to print out a document just to be sure and it printed out perfectly. And yes I said a “new” 4800 which I am quite pleased about.

The whole time I dealt with Epson I was treated respectfully and professionally and in the end I got what was needed to fix my issue. That is the way a company should support their customers, Bell Mobilty can take lessons from Epson on how to keep it simple and ensure customer satisfaction. I have nothing but positive for Epson and will recommend Epson based on the positive customer service experience I had with them.
