ReRun is My Hero

I always enjoy reading Peanuts cartoons and in some ways I can relate to Charlie Brown and his quest for the Red Haired Girl. While Snoopy will always remain my favorites I especially like the strips with Rerun, Lucy and Linus’ little brother. Rerun is more skeptical and is never afraid to ask why or to try new things. His goals in life are pretty simple, survive the bike rides on the back of his mother’s bike and get a dog. Since his parents will not let him get a dog he tries to buy Snoopy from Charlie Brown and when that does not work he “borrows” Snoopy although Snoopy does not want to have anything to do with Rerun of course until Rerun has cookies. The strips with Rerun and Snoopy are classics.

Stanley Comes for a Visit

Today my old buddy Stanley came to Chilliwack for a visit. Brian Burke, General Manager of the Anaheim Ducks and Co- Owner of the Chilliwack Bruins brought the Stanley Cup to Chilliwack. The arrival was planned for 11:30am with pictures to follow from noon to 3pm. I decided to go down and check out Stanley and maybe get a picture, when I arrived at Cottonwood Mall at 10:30am there was already a line with approximately a hundred people. I figured I would join the queue and if the wait became too long I could always pass. The time passed quickly and all of a sudden a buzz could be heard down the mall and being lead in by a pair of bagpipers and a small military guard came Lord Stanley’s Cup proudly carried by Brian Burke.

Having waited almost an hour I decided to wait and get a picture with my old buddy Stanley and Brian Burke. The line moved quite quickly and at one point Brian Burke took a little baby and put him in the bowl which drew some oohs and ahhs from the crowd. While waiting in line I spoke with one of the organizers and he told me they were expecting 300-400 people but it looks like more than 1500 people had shown up. Once my turn came up I received a nice handshake and shared a few words with Brian Burke, had a picture taken and I was off into the crowd.

Once outside I saw how enormous the lineup was and I was glad I decided to come a little early. I was talking to someone and they mentioned how special it was for the Cup to come to Chilliwack and they wondered why it was not brought into Vancouver. I said maybe it was a way for Brian Burke to rub it in to the Vancouver Canucks. :-)

Personally I think it was a nice gesture on Brian Burke’s part to bring the Cup for a visit. Thanks Brian

Mmmm Beer

What is better than an ice cold beer on a hot day, how about complimentary beer. I am on quite a few different mailing lists and on occasion I have received invitations to some promo event or other and normally I think about going and then decide at the last minute to not attend. Last week I received an invite to Milestones Bar and Grill to learn how to pour a proper glass of Stella Artois. Deciding that this might be fun I asked a friend to join me for dinner, I was not sure what the “event” would entail but figured the company and food would make it worthwhile even if the event was a bust.

I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the restaurant and was informed the beer was complimentary and that the hosts were two extremely attractive young ladies who taught me the proper way to pour a Stella Artois. Free beer, great food and good company, what else can a person ask for….Mmmm Beer.

My Annual Rant: Baseball

I just do not understand how America’s pastime can be so backwards. So you have the All Star Game and Festivities and during the festivities you have a Home Run Derby where “individual” players show which “individual” player can hit the most home runs. For this event the players wear All Star uniforms which look good although their individual team uniforms makes more sense. Now we have the actual All Star Game which is a “team” event by the way and the players wear their individual team uniforms. It looks horrible and makes no sense whatsoever. I just do not understand how a major sports league can be so backwards.

Hollywood Movie Formula AKA Product Placement

I went to see Transformers last week and while I enjoyed the action and special effects I was a little disappointed with the attempt at a viable story. Shia LaBeouf was a pleasant surprise and he brought a lot of humanity to the character and I particularly enjoyed his interactions with Bumblebee. While Megan Fox is extremely hot she adds nothing to the movie and along with Rachael Taylor are the standard eye candy that one comes to expect in all Hollywood movies.

Something I did notice was the massive product placement which was prevalent throughout the movie. This got me to thinking so I checked some of Michael Bay’s other movies and although not as in your face as in Transformers it is obvious in The Rock as well as The Island. Not a bad idea I guess as it adds to the bottom line for the movie. Still I believe it does take away from the story when jokes and dialogue are added into a movie to showcase the products. Pretty soon the commercials we see at the beginning of the movie will be interspersed throughout the movie either as part of the movie or worse as actual commercials.

Oh I do like the new Camaro. I could see myself driving one especially a convertible. We shall see.
